Godstone Thermal Roof Survey
We carry out thermal roof surveys in Godstone and the rest of Surrey. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
What a thermal roof survey does not cover
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- A formal energy assessment
- Confirming water without moisture readings
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
How a thermal roof survey works in Godstone
Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photos, so it is easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. Premium reports are sent the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. Common reasons to book are areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, across ceilings below the roof, commercial roofs and pitched roof slopes.
In a village or hamlet like Godstone, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

How it works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, it typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Cottages and farmhouses around Godstone often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Thermal roof surveys around Godstone
With Titsey Place about 4.1 miles north-east, Godstone sits in an area with a long building history. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.
Anyone responsible for a site like Godstone Village School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Godstone questions
Is my home in Godstone listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Godstone within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
How soon will I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, let us know when you book.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
The camera doesn’t see water itself. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, and moisture readings are used to check it.
How many surveys have you done?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?
It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
Useful tips for Godstone property owners
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Buyers get extra information from thermal images that the eye can miss. Hidden problems found before exchange can be raised with the seller or agent. Around Godstone, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and tell us about the roof. We will confirm the figure before booking.

Common roof problems in Godstone
Flat roofs that have leaked for a while can have wet insulation under the covering. Owners want to know how far it has spread before deciding what to do. A thermal survey, checked with moisture readings, can give a much clearer picture.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Cold areas below the roof
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
If you live in an older home near Church of St Nicholas, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Their track record with similar roofs
- What happens after the report arrives
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
