FAQs for Gomshall

Is my home in Gomshall listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is Gomshall within the area you cover?

Yes, Gomshall is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We check everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

How soon will I get the report?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

About our thermal roof survey in Gomshall

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it is colder outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We survey flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and loft conversions, and common reasons people get in touch are wet areas near outlets and upstands and cold areas below the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Gomshall, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What happens on the day

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Somewhere like Gomshall needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.

  1. You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Before the survey

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Check we can get to the back of the property

Advice

Why it’s worth a survey now in Gomshall

Wet insulation under a flat roof doesn’t dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. In a place like Gomshall, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Can I check my roof myself?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Tips that help

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Keep the report to compare against after any repair
  • Photograph damp patches with the date
  • Do not switch the heating off before the visit

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.

Airspace, weather and Gomshall roofs

About 2.9 miles north lies Hatchlands Park, a reminder of how long the area around Gomshall has been built on. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

For an older house near a landmark like The Church of St James, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

What we are asked to look at in Gomshall

Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report, which suits a purchase that is moving quickly.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Patches of heat loss across the roof
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys

Anyone responsible for a site like Shere CofE Aided Infant School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Before booking anyone

  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone

What’s in a roof survey

Roof by roof

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which often helps the camera pick up differences. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.
