Thermal roof surveys in Ham

How a thermal roof survey works in Ham

Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. It also includes a drone inspection where applicable, a structural analysis and a same-day report. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. To book, just ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. We survey insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and loft conversions, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are moisture around outlets and upstands and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering.

In a village or hamlet like Ham, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Ham

Do you cover Ham?

Yes, Ham is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ham?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.

Will thermal imaging find my leak?

It often helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It is used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.

What does the report include?

Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

The survey, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. In a small place like Ham, access is typically the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Preparing for the visit

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent

What happens if roof problems are left?

The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. Outbuildings and barns around Ham are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Ham

Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Damp around roof outlets and upstands
  • Ceilings that feel colder in places
  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured
  • Patches of heat loss across the roof

Walmer Castle, about 4.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Ham. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • When you will get the report

What to expect from a roof survey

When you need someone else

It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before booking:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Thermal roof surveys around Ham

The coast is about 4 miles or less from Ham, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Anyone responsible for a site like Worth Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you live in an older home near Church of St George, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Keep a record of when stains appear
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking

You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.

Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.

What we look for on each type of roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Water under felt or asphalt can stay hidden for years. The camera can give clues to where it’s sitting, given suitable conditions on the day.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.
