Thermal roof surveys in Marley

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Marley

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. If you’re worried about areas of a flat roof that may hold water and damp around chimneys and parapets, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on insulated roof spaces, loft conversions and pitched roof slopes alike.

Some older homes in villages like Marley are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Marley questions

Will you come out to Marley?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Marley is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

How long does the survey take?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

How do I book a survey in Marley?

Just ring 07833 053749 or email us. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.

Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?

The results depend on the weather. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Flying and imaging in Marley

Marley lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Historic houses like Walmer Castle, about 3.5 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Marley goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

Take a building like Northbourne Church of England Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Marley is about 3 miles north-west of Deal, in Kent. Roofs in Marley get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Kent. Marley is one of the places in Kent we cover. We also survey roofs in Canterbury.

Here we cover the CT14 postcode area for thermal roof surveys. If you need a thermal roof survey at a property on Broad Lane and Marley Lane or anywhere close by, we can help. Other places close to Marley include Finglesham (1 mile north-east), Hacklinge (1 mile north-east), Northbourne (1 mile south), Ham (1 mile north-west) and Sholden Meadows (1 mile south-east). Honest limits

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • The condition of timbers we cannot see
  • A structural engineer’s assessment

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Ceilings below the roof

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Marley?

Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Heat escaping through the roof

Take an older house close to Church of St Augustine: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

How it works

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. In total, it takes about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older roofs in small places like Marley can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Find any records of previous roof work
