Thermal roof survey in Hampton Poyle: what you get
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey ceilings below the roof, loft conversions and flat roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are water that travels before it shows and damp around roof outlets and upstands.
In a village or hamlet like Hampton Poyle, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Airspace, weather and Hampton Poyle roofs
About 3.9 miles west lies Blenheim Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Hampton Poyle has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Hampton Poyle is about 3 miles from Oxford Airport. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Common roof problems in Hampton Poyle
Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Stains that keep coming back
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Cold areas below the roof
If you look after a building such as Gosford Hill School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Questions from Hampton Poyle
Is Hampton Poyle within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is my home in Hampton Poyle listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

What we do, step by step
When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where it applies. The survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Hampton Poyle, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Preparing for the visit
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Leave side gates unlocked
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
Arrange a survey
A quick phone call is usually the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Advice
Different roofs, different checks
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and can’t be read from them.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
Before and after the survey
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, so you can go through the images with us. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
What this survey can’t tell you
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and does not.
