Common questions in Hardley

Do you cover Hardley?

Yes, Hardley is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Hardley as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is Hardley within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?

On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take an hour or two for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. You’ll then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.

Can a thermal camera see water?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.

Thermal roof survey in Hardley: what you get

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It helps to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast as you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. Common reasons to book are water getting in at parapets and stacks and gaps in loft insulation, on commercial roofs, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces.

Villages like Hardley often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

How we price thermal roof surveys

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:

  • Which survey package you book
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Booking your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • What’s prompted the survey
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Where the property is, with the postcode

A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Flying and imaging in Hardley

The coast is about 2 miles or less from Hardley, and wind off the sea can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Beaulieu Palace House, about 2.9 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hardley. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. If you look after a building such as The New Forest Academy, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • The condition of timbers we can’t see

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions

How it works

The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit usually takes about one to two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Cottages and farmhouses around Hardley often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice

Common roof problems in Hardley

Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. The Premium Survey brings thermal imaging and a drone inspection where applicable, with a report the same day, which helps when timescales are tight.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Leaks that are hard to trace
  • Wet insulation beneath the membrane
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Anne, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

What a roof survey includes

Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Keep a record of when stains appear
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Check outlets after heavy rain

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
