Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Heathfield
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Heathfield?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Heathfield is about 3 miles from Solent Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Will you come out to Heathfield?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
What happens next?
You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.
When does the report arrive?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.
Thermal roof survey in Heathfield: what you get
We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. Typical surveys look at possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions, across flat roofs, loft conversions and insulated roof spaces.
Places like Heathfield can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Before and after the survey
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.
Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Heathfield
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Flying and imaging in Heathfield
Heathfield lies within about 3 miles of the sea. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list.
Take a building like Ranvilles Infant School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Fareham Shopping Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.
Heathfield is about 1 mile west of Fareham, in Hampshire. We carry out thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Heathfield. Heathfield is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire we cover for thermal roof surveys. Our Portsmouth page covers surveys nearby.

How it works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Parking around Heathfield is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where applicable.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
Before we arrive
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached

Related advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
What a survey costs
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- Height and safe access
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT, and we’ll tell you which fits.
Helping us price your survey
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
When you are ready to go ahead, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.
When to book a survey in Heathfield
Flat roofs that have leaked for a while can have wet insulation under the covering. Knowing how much of the roof is affected helps decide between a local repair and more. A thermal survey, checked with moisture readings, can give a much clearer picture.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Stains that keep coming back
- Cold areas below the roof
- Missing or slipped insulation
Hotels and guest houses near Heathfield can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do.
Questions to ask before booking
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
