Thermal roof survey in Hill Head

Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We’ll discuss the weather with you when booking, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. If you’ve noticed thin or uneven insulation in the roof and leaks that are hard to trace, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Somewhere as small as Hill Head, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Hill Head. To discuss a property or a block, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed ahead of time. We survey on any day of the week, which can make access easier.

What we do, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Around Hill Head, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Preparing for the visit

  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared

Why act early in Hill Head

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so you know where to put things right. For older village homes like those around Hill Head, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Can I check my roof myself?

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

What we cannot see

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:

  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • A structural engineer’s assessment

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What to let us know when you contact us

A few details help us suggest the right survey and price. When you contact us, tell us:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.

Common questions in Hill Head

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hill Head?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Is Hill Head within the area you cover?

Yes, Hill Head is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

What conditions are best for thermal imaging?

Conditions on the day affect the results. It works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind. Rain and strong wind can make the images less clear, so we discuss the forecast when booking.

What’s in the survey report?

A written report with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, by urgency where it matters. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

It can be useful, though pitched roofs are typically harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we also look from the loft where it is safe.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it is safe. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

Drones, thermal imaging and Hill Head roofs

Hill Head is within about 1 mile of the coast, and coastal wind can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Solent Airport is about 2 miles from Hill Head. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Crofton Hammond Infant School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Fareham Shopping Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Take an older house close to Holy Rood Church: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Hill Head is about 3 miles south-west of Fareham, in Hampshire. We cover Hill Head and the rest of Hampshire. Hill Head is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire we cover. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.
