Hill Head questions
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Hill Head?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Solent Airport is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hill Head?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
What insurance do you have?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.
How do I arrange a pre-purchase roof survey in Hill Head?
Simply call 07833 053749 or send us an email. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
Do you work in Hill Head?
Yes. We survey roofs in Hill Head and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. For a price, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Can I take the findings back to the seller?
Yes. Buyers use the findings to ask questions, ask for repairs before completion or ask for a price change. The outcome is between you and the seller.
Do you need to go inside the property?
If it can be arranged, yes. From the loft space we can see staining, timbers and underlay. If access is not possible, we note it in the report.
About our pre-purchase roof survey in Hill Head
The roof is one of the most expensive parts of a home to repair, and one of the hardest for a buyer to see. Our pre-purchase roof survey gives you a close look at it before you’re committed. We check the coverings, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and the loft space where it is safe to get in. The findings come in a written report with photos. Common reasons to book are gutters choked with leaves and moss and slipped or missing slates and tiles, on the roof space, lead flashings and valleys and gutters and downpipes.
Older buildings in small places like Hill Head may be listed or in a conservation area. If so, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so check with the council before work starts. Whether you are buying or signing off new roofing, it is worth knowing where you stand, as well as what condition the roof is in. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What happens on the day
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect what can be seen safely, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes between one and two hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older roofs in small places like Hill Head can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- You get in touch after your offer is agreed, with the address and your target exchange date.
- Access is arranged through you, the agent or the seller.
- We inspect the roof from ground level, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it is safe.
- We check and photograph the slates or tiles, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters.
- We email a written report with photos and recommendations, ready for you to use before exchange.
Before the survey
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Find any records of previous roof work

Useful tips for Hill Head property owners
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Give your solicitor a copy of the report
- Ask when the roof was last worked on
- Request records of any re-roofing
- Check the lease for roof repair responsibilities
If you want quotes for the work, roofers can work from the report. The photos show the defects and where they are, which makes quotes easier to compare.
Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Poor ventilation lets condensation build up, wetting timbers and insulation. Avoid packing insulation into the eaves so tightly that air can’t flow.
What affects the price in Hill Head
Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.
Booking your survey
When you call or email, these details help:
- Anything about access we should know
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form, and we will ask about the building and what you need. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
What a pre-purchase roof survey does not cover
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- The condition of the rest of the house (that is a RICS home survey)
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
What we look at
- Natural slate
- Flat-roofed extensions and dormers
- Lead flashings and valleys
- Gutters and downpipes
- Chimney stacks
- The roof space
- Clay and concrete tiles
Pre-purchase roof surveys in Hill Head: local notes
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Hill Head, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, which is worth knowing before you buy or pay for new work. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. For a purchase or a newly finished roof, the materials decide which details matter most.
For landlords with property near Fareham station, it’s worth knowing a roof’s condition before you buy it, or before you sign off new roofing work on it. For an older house near a landmark like Holy Rood Church, the roof may have had decades of patch repairs, and the survey shows where they are.

Checking the roof from ground level
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Different roofs, different checks
Gutters and parapets
Parapet and box gutters are hidden behind walls and can overflow inside. Where we can see them safely, we check the linings and outlets.
Clay and concrete tiles
Tiled roofs often last half a century or longer. Cracked, slipped or missing tiles are noted, and for mismatched replacements that point to past repairs.
