FAQs for Iden Green
Is my home in Iden Green listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Iden Green?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and Iden Green is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials frequently behave differently from dry ones. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?
It can be useful, though pitched roofs are typically harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Iden Green
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. The camera does not see water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We survey insulated roof spaces, loft conversions and ceilings below the roof, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are water that travels before it shows and damp patches with no obvious cause.
Villages like Iden Green often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

How the survey changes by roof type
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Loft insulation
Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Flat roofs
- Loft conversions
- Pitched roof slopes
Useful tips for Iden Green property owners
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
What affects the price in Iden Green
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- House, block, shop or office
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
Booking your survey
What helps most when you contact us:
- The kind of building and roof involved
- The address and postcode of the property
- What made you get in touch
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
Booking is simple: just call 07833 053749 or send us an email, tell us about the property and we will suggest the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.
How the survey works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Iden Green can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Getting ready for the survey
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
How to book
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Common roof problems in Iden Green
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. The camera helps narrow the search.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St George, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Flying and imaging in Iden Green
Older houses across Kent frequently have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. About 4.2 miles south lies Great Dixter, a reminder of how long the area around Iden Green has been built on. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Anyone responsible for a site like Benenden Church of England Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
