How a thermal roof survey works in Knowle

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It helps to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We will discuss the weather with you when booking, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. We survey commercial roofs, insulated roof spaces and pitched roof slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are damp around roof outlets and upstands and water getting in at parapets and stacks.

Somewhere as small as Knowle, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly.

Questions from Knowle

Do you carry out roof surveys in Knowle?

Yes, Knowle is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is Knowle within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Which survey includes thermal imaging?

Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. An in-person consultation and a follow-up 12 months later are included too. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.

Does the weather affect a thermal survey?

Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. Our report notes the conditions and how they affected the findings.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

What’s in the report?

A report with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Airspace, weather and Knowle roofs

Knowle lies within about 4 miles of the sea, and coastal wind can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Fareham Shopping Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most. Take an older house close to Church of St Francis: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. If you look after a building such as Orchard Lea Infant School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Knowle is about 2 miles north of Fareham, in Hampshire. Knowle is one of many places we visit across Hampshire, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire, from the larger towns to small villages. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

We cover every part of PO17 for thermal roof surveys and the streets around it. Local streets include Serotine Close, Boundary Walk and Park Approach, all of which we cover. Neighbouring places we cover for thermal roof surveys include Funtley (1 mile south), Tapnage (1 mile north-west), Heathfield (2 miles south), Segensworth (2 miles west) and Titchfield Park (2 miles south-west). Further out, we also cover Winchester (13 miles north), Gosport (6 miles south-east), Havant (10 miles east), Eastleigh (9 miles north-west), Horndean (9 miles east) and Totton (13 miles west).

What a survey costs

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • The size of the roof
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT.

Getting in touch

A little information up front helps. Please include:

  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof

To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know the address and what’s prompted the survey. You’ll know the price before anything is booked.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Repeated repairs that do not stop a leak are a sign the source hasn’t been traced. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, rather than more guesswork. Around Knowle, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

How it works

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. For a village or hamlet like Knowle, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

How to prepare

  • Check we can get to the back of the property

Useful tips for Knowle property owners

Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Keep the report to compare against after any repair

Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, with our recommendations. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.

Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Water that gets under a covering can spread a long way before it shows.
