About our thermal roof survey in Over Wallop

A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That’s why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. The report is clear about what the images show and what they do not. Where something cannot be confirmed, we say what would help next. If you’re worried about thin or uneven insulation in the roof and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In a small place like Over Wallop, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What we can’t see

We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Loft conversions
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Flat roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces

What we’re asked to look at in Over Wallop

Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.

We’re frequently asked to look at:

  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Damp around chimneys and parapets

If you look after a building like Wallop Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Common questions in Over Wallop

Do you cover Over Wallop?

Yes, Over Wallop is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

How do I find out if my home in Over Wallop is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

How do I book a survey in Over Wallop?

Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

What happens on the day

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a hamlet or village like Over Wallop, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Related advice

What you can safely check yourself

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What we look for on each type of roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. The camera can give clues to where it is sitting, given suitable conditions on the day.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. The report explains what the images can tell you and what they cannot.

Thermal roof surveys around Over Wallop

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Peter, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
