Thermal imaging roof survey in Amport, Hampshire
Thermal roof surveys in Amport from an independent, experienced roof surveyor. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys.
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Heat escaping through the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
How a thermal roof survey works in Amport
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We will discuss the weather with you when booking, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. If you’ve noticed leaks that are hard to trace and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Somewhere as small as Amport, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Practical tips
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
If you are buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether that is asking for work or discussing the price.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
Drones, thermal imaging and Amport roofs
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mary, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Amport
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Cold areas below the roof
- Gaps in loft insulation
If you look after a building such as Amport Church of England Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
What to check before booking
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Which limits apply to the survey
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

What else we do in Amport
What we cannot see
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- An energy rating for the building
- The condition of timbers we can’t see
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Commercial roofs
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
- Ceilings below the roof
What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere like Amport needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Before the survey
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Advice
For landlords and managing agents
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.
Amport questions
Is my home in Amport listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you cover Amport?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Amport is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or email us and tell us about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
It can help, but the results are frequently less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Will I get photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Why act early in Amport
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is frequently to open up the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. In a place like Amport, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
