Questions from Parkhurst
Is my home in Parkhurst listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you come out to Parkhurst?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
How long will you be at the property?
It usually takes between one and two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The report follows by email.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
How a thermal roof survey works in Parkhurst
Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, which is hard to judge by eye. We then check those areas with moisture readings. We survey commercial roofs, loft conversions and pitched roof slopes, and people most often book us about missing or slipped insulation and damp patches with no obvious cause.
In a village or hamlet like Parkhurst, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Useful tips for Parkhurst property owners
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, with our recommendations. Premium reports are sent the same day.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry in suitable weather.
What happens on the day
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. Somewhere as small as Parkhurst, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Before we arrive
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Keep pets in another room

Common roof problems in Parkhurst
Once a leak has been fixed, people often ask whether the roof is still wet. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain when the conditions on the day are suitable.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Parkhurst, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition.

Flying and imaging in Parkhurst
Parkhurst is within about 4 miles of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
With Carisbrooke Castle about 2.1 miles south, the area around Parkhurst has a long history. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. If you look after a building like Hunnyhill Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- An energy rating for the building
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

- Pitched roof slopes
- Loft conversions
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
