Thermal imaging roof survey in Shalstone, Buckinghamshire
An experienced roof surveyor for thermal roof surveys in Shalstone. Over 5,000 surveys and 20+ years behind us across London and the South East.
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference. Some pointers:
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Keep a record of when stains appear
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Shalstone
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. We’re often asked to look into gaps in loft insulation and cold spots on ceilings under the roof, across ceilings below the roof, pitched roof slopes and flat roofs.
In a village or hamlet like Shalstone, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

How the survey changes by roof type
Pitched slate and tile roofs
On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Thin membranes can show patterns from the layers beneath. Shiny surfaces can reflect heat, so we take care reading the images.
Flying and imaging in Shalstone
About 2 miles east lies Stowe House, a reminder of how long the area around Shalstone has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Edward, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Why get it checked now?
If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you spend. Outbuildings and barns around Shalstone are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and the package you choose.

When you need someone else
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- A formal energy assessment
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Ceilings below the roof
- Flat roofs
What we do, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Rural addresses near Shalstone can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
- Check the loft hatch can be reached
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Advice
Checking the roof from the ground
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Questions from Shalstone
Is my home in Shalstone listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you cover Shalstone?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Shalstone as anywhere else.
Does the weather affect a thermal survey?
The results depend on the weather. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. Our report notes the conditions and how they affected the findings.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We check everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Can a thermal camera see water?
The camera does not see water itself. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, and moisture readings are used to check it.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
It frequently helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.
