Thermal roof survey in Chackmore: what you get
A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. Common reasons to book are stains that keep coming back and damp around chimneys and parapets, on insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and flat roofs.
Somewhere as small as Chackmore, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Older rural homes like those around Chackmore can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before we arrive
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Check we can get to the back of the property

Thermal roof surveys around Chackmore
Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
Stowe House, about 1.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Chackmore. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition. If you look after a building such as St James and St John CofE Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Take an older house close to Parish Church of St Mary: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Chackmore: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Chackmore is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Will you come out to Chackmore?
Yes, Chackmore is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It frequently helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.
How experienced are you?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.
What insurance do you have?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can help, but the results are frequently less clear than on a flat roof. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
What we look for on each type of roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences often show through. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.
Why get it checked now?
For buyers, a thermal survey adds detail that a visual inspection cannot give. Finding hidden moisture before exchange gives you facts to raise with the seller. In a place like Chackmore, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Can I check my roof myself?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
