We carry out thermal roof surveys in South Wimbledon and the rest of Greater London. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.

  • Stains that keep coming back
  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Cold areas below the roof

Thermal roof surveys in South Wimbledon

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Do not switch the heating off before the visit
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Leave the roof to people with safe access
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected

We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.

Thermal roof survey in South Wimbledon: what you get

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. The difference shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We’re frequently asked to look into possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and damp that repairs haven’t cured, on ceilings below the roof, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces.

Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. That’s where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in South Wimbledon as anywhere. Thermal images show surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What this survey can’t tell you

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • A formal energy assessment

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

What happens on the day

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes between one and two hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in South Wimbledon we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We look at the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice

Flying and imaging in South Wimbledon

The flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea comes within about 2 miles of South Wimbledon. Where the drone is part of the survey, the exact boundary is checked for the address first. About 1.6 miles west lies Southside House, a reminder of how long the area around South Wimbledon has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

For a London address like South Wimbledon, it is useful to know about controlled parking before the day. For an older house near a landmark such as Holy Trinity, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Why get it checked now?

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so you know where to put things right. In South Wimbledon, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Common roof problems in South Wimbledon

Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are frequently invisible from outside. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:

  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
  • Stains that keep coming back

For businesses in and around places such as Southside Wandsworth, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most.

What to check before booking

  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • How soon the report will arrive

What’s in a roof survey

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Questions from South Wimbledon

Does a conservation area affect roof work in South Wimbledon?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Are there drone restrictions around South Wimbledon?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. The flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea comes within about 2 miles of South Wimbledon. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

How long is the visit?

It usually takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. The report follows by email.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Can a thermal camera see water?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.

Does someone need to be in?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
