Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Standford
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Leaks frequently run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. If you’re worried about missing or slipped insulation and cold spots on ceilings under the roof, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Standford may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What happens on the day
The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Standford, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Leave side gates unlocked

Why get it checked now?
If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you spend. In a place like Standford, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Our price is from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.

Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it is easy to find each area on the roof.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
Drones, thermal imaging and Standford roofs
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask.
For an older house near a landmark like St Mark's Sacred Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. If you look after a building like Weyford Nursery and Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What else we do in Standford
Different roofs, different checks
Loft insulation
From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We look where there’s safe access.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
Questions from Standford
Is my home in Standford listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you come out to Standford?
Yes, Standford is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a same-day report.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
What do I do with the report?
We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. Our report notes the conditions and how they affected the findings.
Will I get photos?
Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
What a survey costs
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Roof area
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Helping us price your survey
You do not need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to tell us:
- What made you get in touch
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll explain the options and the price.
When you need someone else
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- An energy rating for the building
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- The condition of timbers we cannot see
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What our survey covers.
