How a thermal roof survey works in Strand-on-the-Green
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It is important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. We survey commercial roofs, flat roofs and ceilings below the roof, and common reasons people get in touch are damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and missing or slipped insulation.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every address in Strand-on-the-Green is checked before any drone flight, and permission is never taken for granted.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Why get it checked now?
Buyers get extra information from thermal images that the eye can miss. Hidden problems found before exchange can be raised with the seller or agent. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. Knowing what’s needed early gives you time to plan it calmly.
Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for the job before you book.

How it works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in Strand-on-the-Green we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before we arrive
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Keep pets in another room
- Tell us about parking before the day
How to book

Roof by roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which frequently helps the camera pick up differences. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there’s a pattern around them.
What you can safely check yourself
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
What we’re asked to look at in Strand-on-the-Green
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there’s a clear difference between inside and outside.
People normally book a survey after spotting one of these:
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Heat escaping through the roof
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Strand-on-the-Green Infant and Nursery School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
What to check before booking
- Their insurance cover
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
Common questions in Strand-on-the-Green
Is my home in Strand-on-the-Green listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is parking a problem for a survey in Strand-on-the-Green?
It rarely stops a survey, but it’s worth planning. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
What’s in the report?
A photo-illustrated written report, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the images show where improvements may help.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
What a thermal roof survey does not cover
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Proving moisture from the images alone
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Flying and imaging in Strand-on-the-Green
Kew Palace, about 0.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Strand-on-the-Green. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
Shop and office owners around Livat Hammersmith may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. For hotels and guest houses around Strand-on-the-Green, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it pays to find faults before guests do.
