What we look for on each type of roof

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which frequently helps the camera pick up differences. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.

About our thermal roof survey in Gunnersbury

We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, so it is easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. Typical surveys look at heat escaping through the roof and stains that keep coming back, across insulated roof spaces, pitched roof slopes and commercial roofs.

In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, so privacy and neighbours matter as much as the view. We take care to focus on the roof we have been asked to look at. Tell us about the building and access when booking. Steep slopes, tall chimneys and rear additions are where the extra view helps most.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Thermal roof surveys around Gunnersbury

If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Gunnersbury has a number of hotels within about a mile and a half, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, frequently have flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Shop and office owners around Livat Hammersmith may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Hotels and guest houses near Gunnersbury can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition.

How the survey works

When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. For a visit in Gunnersbury, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. We then look at everything that’s safely in view from the ground, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Keep pets in another room

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys

Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • Roof area
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Booking your survey

Before you get in touch, it helps to have:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Our phone lines are open seven days a week. For a price or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Gunnersbury questions

Are there drone restrictions around Gunnersbury?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

Is parking a problem for a survey in Gunnersbury?

In much of London, parking needs planning: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day run more smoothly.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It often helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.

What insurance do you have?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

How long does the survey take?

It usually takes an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. You will then get the report by email.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can be useful, though pitched roofs are usually harder to read. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the addresses.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.

When to book a survey in Gunnersbury

On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so moisture readings can be targeted.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Ceilings that feel colder in places
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water

If you look after a building such as Strand-on-the-Green Junior School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
