Questions from Thorpe
Do you cover Thorpe?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Thorpe as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Thorpe?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. It shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials frequently behave differently from dry ones. That is why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
About our thermal roof survey in Thorpe
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It’s useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. Common reasons to book are patches of heat loss across the roof and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, across flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs.
Somewhere as small as Thorpe, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Airspace, weather and Thorpe roofs
If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Take a building like Thorpe CofE Aided Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. With Botleys Mansion about 2.5 miles south, the area around Thorpe has a long history. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.
Thorpe is about 2 miles south-east of Egham, in Surrey. Anywhere in Thorpe, we can come and survey your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Our Surrey coverage includes Thorpe. Our Guildford page covers surveys nearby.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Thorpe?
Once a leak has been fixed, people often ask whether the roof is still wet. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain when the conditions on the day are suitable.
Look out for signs like these:
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
The streets around a church like Church of St Mary are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
Before booking anyone
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
What a survey costs
When we price a survey, we consider:
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Roof area
- Which survey package you book
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT, and we can help you choose.
What to tell us when you get in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
Once you know what you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day, weekday or weekend.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.
Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

When you need someone else
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

What happens on the day
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a hamlet or village like Thorpe, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We check the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: ring 07833 053749 or email us, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Thorpe
Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so improvements can go where they’re needed. In a place like Thorpe, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
