Thermal roof survey in Tonwell
Thermal imaging is frequently most useful on flat roofs, from small extensions to large commercial roofs. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access. Typical surveys look at cold areas below the roof and damp around roof outlets and upstands, on loft conversions, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces.
Some older homes in villages like Tonwell are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Why get it checked now?
Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. For an older or listed building in a place like Tonwell, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.

The survey, step by step
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes between one and two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Somewhere like Tonwell needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Getting ready for the survey
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

DIY checks: what’s safe
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- House, block, shop or office
- Roof area
- Basic, Standard or Premium
Prices start from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.
Helping us price your survey
We’ll usually ask about:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- What kind of property and roof it is
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or email us, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Common roof problems in Tonwell
Building owners and managing agents use thermal surveys to plan work on larger flat roofs. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so we know where to take moisture readings.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Water that travels before it shows
Take a building like Tonwell St Mary's Church of England Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
