Thermal roof surveys near Waterford

What you can safely check yourself

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

How a thermal roof survey works in Waterford

Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. It is useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. We’re often asked to look into thin or uneven insulation in the roof and heat escaping through the roof, on commercial roofs, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Waterford, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

How the survey works

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older rural homes like those around Waterford can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Roof by roof

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Inside the roof space, thermal images can help with damp around stacks, valleys and roof windows. Findings are checked with moisture readings.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Waterford

Do you cover Waterford?

Yes, Waterford is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Is my home in Waterford listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?

It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.

Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect what can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Flying and imaging in Waterford

Digswell House, about 4.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Waterford. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

The streets around a church like Church of St Michael and All Angels are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. What this survey can’t tell you

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
  • An energy rating for the building
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces

Before and after the survey

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • File the images with your roof records
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.

Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Water that gets under a covering can spread a long way before it shows.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Before replacing a large flat roof, it helps to know how much of it is actually wet. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you spend. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Waterford, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for the job before you book.
