Airspace, weather and Walthamstow Village roofs
Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. With Bruce Castle about 2.9 miles west, Walthamstow Village sits in an area with a long building history. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
If you live in an older home near St. Mary's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Shop and office owners around 17 & Central may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Take a building like Walthamstow School for Girls: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Walthamstow Village is about 1 mile south-east of Walthamstow, in Greater London. Surveys in Walthamstow Village work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Our area takes in places right across Greater London, large and small. We also survey roofs in London.
Postcode districts we cover here for thermal roof surveys: E17, E10 and E11. If you need a thermal roof survey at a property on Elm Road, Eden Road and Lorne Road or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Nearby, we also carry out thermal roof surveys in Walthamstow (1 mile north-west), Bakers Arms (1 mile south), Upper Walthamstow (1 mile east), Warner Estate (1 mile north-west) and Snaresbrook (1 mile east). Thermal roof survey in Walthamstow Village: what you get
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. It isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. If you are worried about leaks far from where the stain appears and areas of a flat roof that may hold water, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces alike.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Walthamstow Village, the address is checked against all of them, and permission is never taken for granted.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

FAQs for Walthamstow Village
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Walthamstow Village?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Is my home in Walthamstow Village listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
What does the report include?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photos. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take about 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The written report follows by email.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.
How it works
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Tips that help
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
Where a pattern cannot be confirmed, the report says what could help, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.
What happens if roof problems are left?
If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you spend. Behind a London parapet, a blocked gutter can sit full of water without anyone seeing it. When the stain finally shows, the damage underneath is often older than it looks.
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
