Thermal roof survey in West Challow

Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. We survey flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces, and people most frequently book us about leaks far from where the stain appears and cold areas below the roof.

Some older homes in villages like West Challow are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A damp patch that keeps coming back usually has a cause that hasn’t been found. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, rather than more guesswork. Older cottages and farmhouses around West Challow can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

West Challow questions

Is West Challow in the area you cover?

Yes, West Challow is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Is my home in West Challow listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It is a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. If the source cannot be confirmed, we’ll say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.

How quickly is the report sent?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

Airspace, weather and West Challow roofs

There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Laurence, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Take a building like St Nicholas CofE Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What happens on the day

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere like West Challow needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before we arrive

  • Jot down any questions you want answered

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • The condition of timbers we cannot see
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
