Chimney survey in Blue Town
Each stack is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, and from the loft where there’s access. With our Premium Survey, a drone inspection is included where it applies. Where part of a stack cannot be seen, the report says so. Every defect we find is photographed and described in plain words. Typical surveys look at damaged chimney pots and cowls and worn or missing pointing, across shared and party-wall stacks, chimney breasts and chimney pots and cowls.
In a smaller place like Blue Town, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A careful look shows whether anything has started to loosen before it lets water in. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Questions from Blue Town
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Blue Town, take more of a battering?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch, and Blue Town is within about 1 mile of the coast.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Blue Town?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
How do I book a survey in Blue Town?
The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll recommend the right survey. We survey on any day of the week.
What does the report include?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Can you survey a chimney stack we share with next door?
Yes. We look at the parts we can see safely and the parts you can give us access to. If a defect seems to be on your neighbour’s side, the report records it, so you can discuss it with them.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Blue Town
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
What a survey costs
When we price a survey, we consider:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- How big the roof is
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Helping us price your survey
When you call or email, these details help:
- Anything about access we should know
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
We survey roofs on weekdays and at weekends. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and the days you’d prefer.
When you need someone else
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Areas we can’t view from safe positions
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Chimney breasts
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Flaunching
- Lead flashings
- Brick chimney stacks
- Chimney pots and cowls
What we do, step by step
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Blue Town is booked with the forecast in mind: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- We look at every stack from wherever it can be seen safely.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft space.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
Booking a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Chimney surveys in Blue Town: local notes
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Blue Town, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
Take an older house close to Parish Church of the Holy Trinity: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Edward's Catholic Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. For landlords with property near Sheerness-On-Sea station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

Why get it checked now?
Most people never get a proper look at their chimney stacks. Defects tend to go unseen until there is a stain. A survey gives you a clear picture before that happens. On a bungalow or cottage around Blue Town, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.
Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.
