Earlswood Chimney Survey
Chimney surveys around Earlswood, with a written report you can act on. Book a weekday or weekend visit.
- Gaps where the stack meets the roof
- Staining on walls around the chimney
- Signs that a stack is leaning
Practical tips
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Use a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances
- Ask about consent before removing a chimney on an older property
- Glance at the stacks from the street now and then
- Leave close inspection to people with safe access
The report is emailed to you, ready to share with a roofer or builder. Each defect is described in plain words and shown in a photo, so it is easy to follow.
Have worn pointing and cracked flaunching dealt with early. It is far simpler than rebuilding a stack later.
Chimney survey in Earlswood
Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: the pots and cowls, the flaunching on top, the pointing, the brickwork and the flashings where it meets the roof. We also look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there’s safe access. The findings come in a written report with photos and recommendations. We survey single stacks on houses and groups of stacks on bigger buildings. If you’ve noticed lifted or split lead flashings and a chimney out of line, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Houses in smaller places like Earlswood can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose before it lets water in. Once one ridge tile or slate moves, wind gets under the next one too.
The report records the chimney stack as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What this survey can’t tell you
Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Hidden damage within the stack
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Flaunching
- Chimney breasts
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Lead flashings
- Brick chimney stacks
Roof by roof
Chimney pots and cowls
Pots sit in the flaunching on top of the stack, and cowls or caps sit on the pots. We check that they look secure and undamaged.
Brick stacks
Most chimney stacks are built of brick, with mortar joints that wear over time. We check the bricks for spalling and the joints for erosion.
Do you need a chimney survey in Earlswood?
Years of fires can affect the mortar inside a stack. Mortar can deteriorate unevenly from flue gases and moisture, which is one reason stacks start to lean.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Gaps where the stack meets the roof
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
- Spalled or crumbling bricks
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
If you run a business near The Belfry, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.
Before you book anyone
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours

DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
FAQs for Earlswood
I let a flat near Earlswood (Surrey) station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us with the details.
Is Earlswood in the area you cover?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Earlswood is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Do you inspect the flue?
No. Our survey covers the outside of the stack and the roof around it. For the flue, you will need a sweep or, for gas, a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What does the report include?
A written report with photos, covering the condition of the chimney stack, the defects we found and what we recommend. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
How experienced are you?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take an hour or two for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.
How the survey works
On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. After that, we check everything we can see safely. The survey normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. A visit to Earlswood is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Tell us about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft space.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before the survey
