Fernhill Chimney Survey
Get a clear view of the chimney stack at a property in Fernhill from an independent roof surveyor. Visits run on weekdays and weekends, in the daytime.
- Damp patches on chimney breasts
- Gaps where the stack meets the roof
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
When to book a survey in Fernhill
TV aerials, satellite dishes and their brackets are often fixed to chimneys. The extra load in wind can work bricks and joints loose. Any fixings on the stack are checked and recorded.
Problems we come across often include:
- Signs that a stack is leaning
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Spalled or crumbling bricks
- Loose, cracked or missing pots
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near County Mall, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Whether VAT is added on top
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- What insurance they carry
How a chimney survey works in Fernhill
Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It is not a flue inspection, a chimney sweep or a gas safety inspection. For the flue itself, you will need a sweep or, for gas appliances, a Gas Safe registered engineer. If something we see points to the flue, we’ll say so. If you’re worried about mortar washing out of the joints and flaunching that has broken away, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Rendered stacks
We cannot see the bricks behind render without it being opened up, so the report explains what we could and couldn’t assess.
Brick stacks
Spalled bricks, where the face has flaked off, are a sign of water and frost. Any spalling is noted with photos.
What we do, step by step
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, emailed to you. On timing, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like Fernhill, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- We look at every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the roof space.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before we arrive
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Tell us about parking before the day

Advice
What affects the cost of chimney surveys
All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:
- House, block, shop or office
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- How big the roof is
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.
What to let us know when you contact us
We will normally ask about:
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- The kind of building and roof involved
- The address and postcode of the property
When you are ready to go ahead, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date, weekday or weekend.

Fernhill questions
Can a landlord with a rental near Gatwick Airport station book a roof survey?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Fernhill?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
Should I worry about a leaning stack?
Don’t ignore it. Leaning often comes from mortar breaking down unevenly. We record its condition with photos, and a structural engineer can confirm whether it’s stable.
How long is the visit?
Expect it to take about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. The written report follows by email.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
Is it a problem to have an unused chimney?
An unused stack still needs to stay weathertight and ventilated. Capping without airflow can lead to damp. Our survey records its condition and how it’s capped, so you can decide with a builder what to do.
Leave it or get it looked at?
If a stack seems to lean, don’t leave it. We record its condition and recommend a structural engineer where needed, so you know where you stand. Around Fernhill, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, with VAT included, and we will tell you which fits.

Chimney surveys around Fernhill
Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Oakwood School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. For landlords with property near Gatwick Airport station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
