Drone roof surveys for Fernhill homes and businesses

Drone roof survey in Fernhill: what you get

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. We will tell you if another approach would work better. We’re frequently asked to look into eroded pointing on a chimney stack and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, on fragile roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs.

Older buildings in small places like Fernhill may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Flying and imaging in Fernhill

Fernhill is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Gatwick Airport. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help.

For businesses in and around places such as County Mall, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most. Anyone responsible for a site like Oakwood School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Fernhill is about 2 miles south-east of Horley, in Surrey. From houses to flats and shops in Fernhill, we can survey the roof. We cover towns and villages across Surrey.

Can I check my roof myself?

It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Fernhill?

Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. The drone covers the surface area by area. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt

Take an older house close to Church of St Bartholomew: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Common questions in Fernhill

Do you cover smaller places like Fernhill?

Yes, Fernhill is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Fernhill?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Fernhill is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Gatwick Airport. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it’s given. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The report follows by email.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Fernhill

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed in advance. We survey seven days a week, which can make access easier.

What this survey can’t tell you

It helps to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

What we check

  • Large and complex roofs

  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Roof by roof

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are frequently seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

The survey, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Fernhill often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
