About our chimney survey in Hounslow
On terraced and semi-detached houses, a chimney stack is often shared with next door. We inspect the parts we can see safely and the parts the owner gives us access to. If a defect appears to be on the neighbour’s side, we note it, so you can talk to them. You get a photo-illustrated written report and what we recommend. If you’ve noticed lifted or split lead flashings and worn or missing pointing, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
London has a great many flats in converted houses and purpose-built blocks, so roofs are frequently shared between several households. Whoever looks after the building needs a clear picture of the roof, chimneys and gutters, in Hounslow as anywhere. A defect on a shared roof can reach more than one flat. A report gives everyone the same picture to plan from, with photographs.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

When to book a survey in Hounslow
Chimney stacks stand above the roof, exposed to wind, rain and frost on every side. Frost opens up cracks in the mortar, and rain gets into worn bricks and joints. Most people book after spotting damp or a loose pot, or before buying.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
- Cracked or missing flaunching
For landlords with property near Hounslow station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
Before you book anyone
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- What they will not be able to tell you
- Their report turnaround times
- Their track record with similar roofs
When you need someone else
A survey is a close look at the chimney stack, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Areas we can’t view from safe positions
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Brick chimney stacks
- Lead flashings
- Chimney breasts
- Flaunching
Why get it checked now?
A damp chimney breast seldom dries out until the cause is found. It can stain walls and damage plaster. Finding the cause means the right work can be planned. In Hounslow, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: a blocked parapet gutter or slipped slate can let water into the flat below or the house next door. Dealing with it early is far less disruptive.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Hounslow
Historic houses such as Osterley House, about 1.6 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Hounslow goes. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
If you look after a building like Chatsworth Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mary the Virgin, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

Hounslow questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hounslow?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Hounslow?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.
What if it rains on the day?
Light rain is normally fine; heavy rain and wind are different. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.
Do you work in Hounslow?
Yes, we do. Hounslow is part of the area we cover, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.
Do you need to go on the roof to check the chimney?
We look from ground level, from windows and from the loft where it is safe. Where applicable, our Premium Survey adds a drone inspection for a closer view. The report is clear about anything that couldn’t be seen.
What do I do with the report?
The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.
The survey, step by step
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos, emailed to you. As for time on site, most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. Mention any building rules, key holders or managing agents when you book.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We check every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Before we arrive
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Useful tips for Hounslow property owners
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Ask for ventilated caps on redundant stacks
- Check with the council before altering a stack in a conservation area or on a listed building
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Use a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances
If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Get small mortar repairs done while they’re small. It is far simpler than rebuilding a stack later.
