What a chimney survey looks like in Nag's Head
Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces frequently have Welsh slate roofs. Behind many of their parapets sit butterfly roofs and valley gutters that cannot be seen from the pavement. In a house like that, shared stacks, party-wall upstands and lead flashings all need looking at as far as they can be seen. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. Historic houses such as Witanhurst, about 1.7 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Nag's Head goes. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof.
If you let a flat or house near Drayton Park station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. Living close to Whittington Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn. The streets around a church such as St Joseph and St Padarn's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

How a chimney survey works in Nag's Head
Redundant chimneys are common, particularly where fires have been replaced by central heating. Even when it isn’t used, a stack has to stay weathertight. Capping a stack without ventilation can trap moisture and lead to damp inside. Our survey looks at how each unused stack has been capped and checks the breasts for damp. You get photos of each stack and our recommendations. We survey flaunching, chimney breasts and chimney pots and cowls, and the problems we are asked to look at most are bricks with flaking faces and worn or missing pointing.
Many London terraces have a butterfly roof, with two slopes meeting in a central valley gutter that drains to the rear. Hidden behind the parapet, that gutter can block or split without anyone seeing it. If your home in Nag's Head has one, it needs checking from somewhere that can actually see it.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Questions from Nag's Head
I let a flat near Drayton Park station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need.
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Nag's Head?
Typically it is manageable with a little notice. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we will work around them.
What do you check on a chimney?
Every part of the stack we can see from safe positions: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and flashings. Leaning, unused stacks and damp on chimney breasts are recorded too.
What insurance do you have?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Do you inspect shared chimneys?
Yes. We look at the parts we can see safely and the parts you can give us access to. If a defect seems to be on your neighbour’s side, the report records it and you can raise it with them.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
What do I do with the report?
You’ll get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Check fixings on the stack are secure
- Use the report as a baseline for future checks
- Leave close inspection to people with safe access
- Check with the council before altering a stack in a conservation area or on a listed building
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the pots, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings, and any damp we found inside. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.
Get small mortar repairs done while they’re small. Small repairs now can save bigger work later.
Can I check my roof myself?
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Different roofs, different checks
Chimney pots and cowls
Pots sit in the flaunching on top of the stack, and cowls or caps sit on the pots. The survey looks for cracked, loose or missing pots and cowls.
Flaunching
Flaunching is the mortar on top of a stack that holds the pots and sheds water. Cracks in it let water into the stack.
What we do, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- We start by noting which stacks are in use, shared or causing concern.
- We check the roof around each stack, including the flashings.
- We look at the flaunching and pots on every stack.
- Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
- The report explains the condition and which work is most urgent.
Before we arrive
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
Book a survey

Advice
When you need someone else
Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- Hidden damage within the stack
- Hidden sides of a shared stack
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

How we price chimney surveys
Survey packages start from £150, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on:
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.
Getting in touch
There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:

- The kind of building and roof involved
