Birchett's Green: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Birchett's Green?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Do you cover smaller places like Birchett's Green?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
What about my neighbours’ privacy?
We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying. We only survey what the owner has asked us to. A word with next door beforehand is a good idea.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.
How long does the visit take?
It normally takes about one to two hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Time for the pre-flight checks is included.
Does your drone take thermal images?
The drone gives you detailed photos of the outside of the roof. If you need thermal imaging, it is part of the Premium Survey, as a separate check.
Can you fly a drone near an airport?
Sometimes, with permission. Confirmed flight restriction zones include Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted, Luton and Southampton, among others, and a flight inside one needs the airport’s or air traffic control’s say-so. If permission is not given, the roof is inspected from other safe viewpoints.
How a drone roof survey works in Birchett's Green
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are moss and weeds taking hold up top and slipped or missing slates on a high roof.
Villages like Birchett's Green frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Airspace, weather and Birchett's Green roofs
Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Shover's Green Baptist Chapel, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. With Wadhurst Castle about 2 miles west, the area around Birchett's Green has a long history. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.
Birchett's Green is about 7 miles south-east of Royal Tunbridge Wells, in East Sussex. What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Older rural homes like those around Birchett's Green can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Advice
When to book a survey in Birchett's Green
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Uplands Community College, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
Questions to ask before booking
- How long the report takes to arrive
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- What exactly goes into their report
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
How we price drone roof surveys
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:
- The size of the roof
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- House, block, shop or office
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
Prices start from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.
What to tell us when you get in touch
There is no need for technical words. It’s enough to tell us:
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- The kind of building and roof involved
- What’s prompted the survey
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
We survey roofs on any day of the week. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Practical tips
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
We email the report to you, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.
Keep the loft space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Make sure insulation does not block the airflow.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey seven days a week, which can make access easier.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.
When you need someone else
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.
