Drone roof survey in Blackfen
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey fragile roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and slates or tiles shifted by high winds.
London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Blackfen as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible.

DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
Drones, thermal imaging and Blackfen roofs
The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 2 miles of Blackfen. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
If you run a business near Broadway Shopping Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. Anyone responsible for a site like Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you live in an older home near Church of the Good Shepherd, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Blackfen questions
How do I find out if my home in Blackfen is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Are there drone restrictions around Blackfen?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 2 miles of Blackfen. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to, and the report makes that clear.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We carry out surveys on any day of the week. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Tips that help
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
- Let us know what you want to see
- Move stored items away from the hatch
File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.
Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
The survey, step by step
We’ll ask a few questions first, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In Blackfen, as in much of London, plenty of properties are flats or terraces without side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. Mention any building rules, key holders or managing agents as you book.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Before the survey
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Check the loft hatch can be reached
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We record the signs of age we can see.
Honest limits
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Fragile roofs
- Large and complex roofs
Why it is worth a survey now in Blackfen
A drone survey disturbs nothing on the roof. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey does not create new problems. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
