Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in East Wickham

Drones need reasonable weather. We don’t fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we will agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. Typical surveys look at moss and weeds taking hold up top and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, on valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in East Wickham, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

How the survey works

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. For a visit in East Wickham, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. On the day, the roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

What this survey can’t tell you

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Tips that help

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.

Flying and imaging in East Wickham

The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 1 mile of East Wickham. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

For businesses in and around places such as Broadway Shopping Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as East Wickham Primary Academy, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Common questions in East Wickham

Is my home in East Wickham listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Are there drone restrictions around East Wickham?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. East Wickham is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

When does the report arrive?

Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

What a survey costs

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Which survey package you book
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

What we need to know

To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:

  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • When you need the report by
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage

To book a survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. We’ll confirm the price before you book.

When to book a survey in East Wickham

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds

As a London address, East Wickham can be tricky for parking: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway when booking, as a space near the door can’t be promised.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Will the report include photos?
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
