Drone roof surveys in Falconwood

How a drone roof survey works in Falconwood

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We’re often asked to look into ridge pieces that have lifted and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, on large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

London roofs sit shoulder to shoulder in terraces and blocks, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we have been asked to look at. Tell us about the building and access when booking. Steep slopes, tall chimneys and rear additions are where the extra view helps most.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Practical tips

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:

  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a London area like Falconwood, the main things to sort out are parking and access: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at everything that’s safely in view from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it is safe, the roof itself.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Leave side gates unlocked

Advice

Questions from Falconwood

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Falconwood?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Are there drone restrictions around Falconwood?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 2 miles of Falconwood. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

What’s in the survey report?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.

How experienced are you?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.

How soon will I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.

What we look for on each type of roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

Chimney stacks

Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We will say if a specialist is needed.

For landlords and managing agents

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed beforehand. Surveys run on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as householders. A written report with photos gives you a clear record of the roof.

How we price drone roof surveys

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:

  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Building height and the viewpoints available

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

Helping us price your survey

There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • When you need the report by
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is

If you’re buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email when you’re ready.

When you need someone else

It helps to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
