What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Drone roof survey in Chilton Green

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. We survey chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are worn lead at chimneys and walls and flat roofs on upper floors that hold water.

Some older homes in villages like Chilton Green are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What a survey costs

We confirm the price for your survey before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Building height and the viewpoints available

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What to let us know when you get in touch

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, it helps to mention:

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • When you need the report by
  • The property’s address and postcode

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form to find out.

Drones, thermal imaging and Chilton Green roofs

Chilton Green lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. About 0.9 miles north-west lies Mottistone Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Chilton Green has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.

Take a building like Brighstone Church of England Aided Primary School: big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. The streets around a church such as St Peter and St Paul's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Chilton Green is about 7 miles south-west of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Whether the building in Chilton Green is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. We cover towns and villages across the Isle of Wight. For surveys nearby, see our Southampton page.

We work across PO30 for drone roof surveys. If you’re just outside Chilton Green, we cover Marsh Green (1 mile south-east), Hulverstone (1 mile north-west), Brookgreen (1 mile west), Brook (2 miles north-west) and Dunsbury (2 miles north-west). Further out, we also cover Newport (7 miles north-east), Ryde (12 miles north-east), Cowes (9 miles north-east), Sandown (11 miles east), Shanklin (10 miles east) and Ventnor (10 miles east). Remote addresses need a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you book.

What happens on the day

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. The survey normally takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older rural homes like those around Chilton Green can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Advice

Chilton Green questions

Is Chilton Green within the area you cover?

Yes, Chilton Green is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

How do I find out if my home in Chilton Green is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or email us.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying. We inspect only the roof you’ve asked about. A word with next door beforehand is a good idea.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Tips that help

Small things make a difference. Some pointers:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.

How the survey changes by roof type

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You cannot see it from the street at all, but it’s plain to see from the air.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
