Different roofs, different checks

Steep slate and tile slopes

Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that.

Ridges and hips

Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.

Drone roof survey in Crondall

Prices start from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. It also includes a follow-up after 12 months. We will tell you if a drone isn’t the right tool for your roof. You get a written report with the close-up photos from the flight. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, valleys and parapet gutters and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about vegetation in valleys and gutters and hidden gutters full of leaves.

In a village or hamlet like Crondall, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Drones, thermal imaging and Crondall roofs

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

With Farnham Castle about 2.7 miles east, the area around Crondall has a long history. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. If you look after a building like Crondall Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Crondall is about 3 miles south of Fleet, in Surrey. In Crondall, as across Surrey, every roof gets the same careful survey. Crondall is one of the places in Surrey we cover. Our Guildford page covers surveys nearby.

When to book a survey in Crondall

From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Problems in those places often go unseen until they leak.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof

Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

  • What insurance they carry

What a roof survey includes

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Crondall often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Preparing for the visit

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Advice

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

What this survey cannot tell you

Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Crondall

How do I find out if my home in Crondall is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Will you come out to Crondall?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Are you insured?

We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

What will the report tell me?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.

Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?

No. The drone sees the roof from outside only. The loft space is checked separately, where there is safe access, as damp and daylight frequently show there first.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Are there drone restrictions in central London?

Central London has restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, and flights there need NATS permission. We check before every flight and seek permission where needed.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. Older and listed buildings around Crondall may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.
