How a drone roof survey works in Ewshot

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. Typical surveys look at lifted or split lead flashings and moss and weeds taking hold up top, on fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

In a village or hamlet like Ewshot, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

The survey, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere like Ewshot needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Why it is worth a survey now in Ewshot

From the ground, you’re guessing about most of a tall roof. Close-up photos show what’s really there. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.

What we are asked to look at in Ewshot

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Typical things we are asked to look at include:

  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge

If you run a business near Hart Shopping Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • When you will get the report

What a good roof survey covers

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Ewshot

Will you come out to Ewshot?

Yes. Ewshot is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ewshot?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Ewshot?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we will take it from there. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

What if my home is near an airport?

Near airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, London City and Stansted, flight restriction zones apply. We check the airspace for your address and seek permission where it’s needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points.

Airspace, weather and Ewshot roofs

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Farnham Castle, about 1.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Ewshot. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

Take a building like St Nicholas' School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Mary's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

What you can safely check yourself

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.
