How a gutter survey works in Ewshot
This survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It’s not a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, we’ll say so in the report, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Anything we find above ground, like a split hopper or a leaking downpipe, is photographed and recorded. We survey eaves gutters, outlets and hoppers and fascias and soffits, and people most frequently book us about gutters packed with leaves or moss and water spilling over the gutter edge.
In a village or hamlet like Ewshot, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on everything that’s safely in view, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Gutter surveys in Ewshot: local notes
Farnham Castle, about 1.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Ewshot. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. In Surrey, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you look after a building such as St Nicholas' School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If you live near a park like Basingbourne Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
Ewshot is about 2 miles south of Fleet, in Surrey. We visit Ewshot as part of our work across Surrey, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Ewshot is one of the places in Surrey we cover. Guildford is in our area too.
We survey roofs across the GU10 postcode area for gutter surveys. If you need a gutter survey at a property on Woodpecker Close, Nuthatch Close and Church Lane or anywhere close by, we can help. Neighbouring places we cover for gutter surveys include Warren Corner (1 mile south-west), Redlands (1 mile west), Dora's Green (1 mile south), Hog Hatch (1 mile south-east) and Crondall (1 mile west). Further out, we also cover Guildford (11 miles east), Woking (12 miles north-east), Camberley (8 miles north-east), Farnham (3 miles south-east), Frimley (7 miles north-east) and Haslemere (12 miles south-east).

What you can safely check yourself
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
FAQs for Ewshot
Is my home in Ewshot listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you come out to Ewshot?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Do you look in the loft space?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so it can be checked before work starts.
What do I do with the report?
You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
There’s no wrong time. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it’s best not to wait as overflowing water can damage walls.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.

What a survey costs
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- Which survey package you book
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The roof’s overall size
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.
Getting in touch
Before you get in touch, it helps to have:
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Your timetable, like an exchange date
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. For a price or to book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
How the survey changes by roof type
Fascias and soffits
Some older soffits may contain asbestos. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Box and secret gutters
A box gutter is built into the roof, frequently behind a parapet and when it overflows, water can get indoors. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them.
What we are asked to look at in Ewshot
Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and gives plants somewhere to grow.
Common reasons to book include:
- Joints that drip after rain
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Overflowing eaves gutters
If you let a flat or house near Farnham station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What happens after the report arrives
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What experience they bring
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
What we do, step by step
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, emailed to you. On timing, it usually takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older roofs in small places like Ewshot can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
How to prepare
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
