Airspace, weather and East End roofs

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. Across Kent, older roofs are frequently handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

For an older house near a landmark like St Margaret's Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Historic houses such as Smallhythe Place, about 5 miles south-east, show how far back building around East End goes. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

East End is about 11 miles west of Ashford, in Kent. From houses to flats and shops in East End, we can survey the roof on a weekday or at the weekend. Our Kent coverage includes East End and the places around it. Our Maidstone page covers surveys nearby.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in East End

Drone roof surveys are available in East End and throughout London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photos and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, ring 07833 053749 or email us. If you’ve noticed flashings that have come away and moss and weeds taking hold up top, we can find out what’s behind it, on tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks alike.

In a small place like East End, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. We record what we find with photos.

How the survey works

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere as small as East End, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Advice

Questions from East End

Is my home in East End listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is East End within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Are you insured?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and details are available on request.

What if my home is near an airport?

That depends on where the roof is. Inside a flight restriction zone, we need permission first, which can add time. Book early if you think you may be affected.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

How much is a survey?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking. To get a price, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.

Honest limits

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs

Why it is worth a survey now in East End

A drone record gives you a baseline. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It’s useful for planning maintenance over the years. For older village homes like those around East End, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
