What we are asked to look at in Fosten Green

Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Loose ridge and hip tiles
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds

The streets around a church such as St Margaret's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Their insurance cover
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • What experience they bring

What’s in a roof survey

How a drone roof survey works in Fosten Green

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe, like old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. We survey tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are moss building up on slopes and in gutters and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings.

In a small place like Fosten Green, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly.

Questions from Fosten Green

Do you cover smaller places like Fosten Green?

Yes, Fosten Green is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Fosten Green is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do drone rules differ in central London?

Central London has restricted areas where NATS permission is needed. Where we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points and explain what we could see.

How experienced are you?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

Our drone takes close-up photographs of the roof. Thermal imaging is a separate check, included in our Premium Survey.

Can you fly a drone near an airport?

Only with the right permission. Confirmed flight restriction zones include Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted, Luton and Southampton, among others, and a flight inside one needs the airport’s or air traffic control’s say-so. Without it, we inspect from other safe viewpoints.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

What happens on the day

Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Cottages and farmhouses around Fosten Green often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before the survey

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

How we price drone roof surveys

To price your survey, we look at:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
  • Which survey package you book
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

What to tell us when you contact us

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It is useful to include:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • When you need the report by

Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will explain the options and the price.

Checking the roof from the ground

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It’s almost impossible to see from ground level, but it’s plain to see from the air.

Chimney stacks

Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we’ll tell you.

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Move stored items away from the hatch

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Fosten Green

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
