Drone roof surveys in Foreland Fields: local notes

Foreland Fields is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Foreland Fields is about 2 miles from Bembridge Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly.

Yaverland Manor lies about 2.6 miles west, so building around Foreland Fields goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself. If you look after a building like Bembridge Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If you live in an older home near Saint Luke, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Foreland Fields is about 4 miles north-east of Sandown, in the Isle of Wight. If you’re in Foreland Fields, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Foreland Fields is one of the places in the Isle of Wight where we work for drone roof surveys. Portsmouth is in our area too.

Remote addresses need a little more planning, so let us know where you are as you book.

How a drone roof survey works in Foreland Fields

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you’ve noticed flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and debris building up in hidden gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Foreland Fields, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It’s useful for planning maintenance over the years. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is usually out of view. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

When you need someone else

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks

Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.

DIY checks: what’s safe

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

The survey, step by step

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs, emailed to you. As for time on site, it typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older roofs in small places like Foreland Fields can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
  • Check we can get to the back of the property
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

FAQs for Foreland Fields

Do you cover smaller places like Foreland Fields?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Foreland Fields?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Foreland Fields is about 2 miles from Bembridge Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Tell us about it as you book and we will plan the survey around it.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.

How much is a survey?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.

How experienced are you?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
