The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It typically takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. For a village or hamlet like Four Elms, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

How a drone roof survey works in Four Elms
Prices start from £400, including VAT. A drone inspection, where applicable, is also part of our Premium Survey, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. It also includes a follow-up after 12 months. If a drone won’t help on your roof, we’ll say so. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photos. We’re often asked to look into vegetation in valleys and gutters and ridge pieces that have lifted, across large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks.
Older buildings in small places like Four Elms may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
The report doesn’t just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Four Elms
Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.
Four Elms questions
Is drone flying allowed in Four Elms?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
Will you come out to Four Elms?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Do I need to be at home?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It depends on the weather and the survey. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.
What’s the best way to book?
It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we will recommend the right survey. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
What we’re asked to look at in Four Elms
The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
The streets around a church such as Congregational Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Are they insured for the work?
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
What we look for on each type of roof
Ridges and hips
Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. Their condition is noted in the report.
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

The wider area around Four Elms has a long history of building, with Chartwell about 2 miles north. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Four Elms Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Why it is worth a survey now in Four Elms
Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. You can show exactly where the problem is, which helps when you ask for quotes. Around Four Elms, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £400, including VAT.

Can I check my roof myself?
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
