Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you are worried about moss building up on slopes and in gutters and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Before and after the survey

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property

File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.

Keep the roof space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

What we’re asked to look at in Friday Hill

From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Peter and St Paul, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Before you book anyone

  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

What’s in a roof survey

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

FAQs for Friday Hill

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Friday Hill?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Friday Hill?

London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

What will the report tell me?

Written findings with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

How much is a survey?

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, confirmed before anything is booked.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Friday Hill

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Roof by roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It is almost impossible to see from the ground, but it’s plain to see from the air.

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

How it works

It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take about one to two hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in Friday Hill we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Let us know who holds the keys.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
