About our drone roof survey in Holloway Down

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. Typical surveys look at vegetation in valleys and gutters and debris building up in hidden gutters, on fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Before a drone goes up in Holloway Down, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

Questions from Holloway Down

Are there drone restrictions around Holloway Down?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Holloway Down is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is my home in Holloway Down listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

How long is the visit?

It normally takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The written report follows by email.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

What does a roof survey cost?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included.

Do you work in Holloway Down?

Yes, we do. Holloway Down is part of the area we cover.

What does the report include?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, finishing with recommendations. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.

The survey, step by step

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. In total, it takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a London conversion, the way into the loft space is frequently from a communal landing or the top flat. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Holloway Down

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Jenny Hammond Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • What experience they bring

What’s in a roof survey

What this survey cannot tell you

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs

Different roofs, different checks

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates frequently point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. Each defect is photographed for the report.

Can I check my roof myself?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
