Drone roof surveys in Hyde farm estate

How a drone roof survey works in Hyde farm estate

From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it cannot see inside. Where there is safe access, we look in the roof space too, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. If there’s no safe loft access, the report says so. We are frequently asked to look into debris building up in hidden gutters and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, across fragile roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and valleys and parapet gutters.

In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. Images are taken to show the roof we are surveying, with care for neighbours’ privacy, in Hyde farm estate as anywhere. Mention access, height and anything unusual about the building when booking. Steep slopes, tall chimneys and rear additions are where the extra view helps most.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Roof by roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

How the survey works

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. For a visit in Hyde farm estate, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. On the day, the roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Airspace, weather and Hyde farm estate roofs

Hyde farm estate is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Close to the centre of London, a great many houses are Victorian or Edwardian terraces, many of them roofed in Welsh slate. Many have butterfly roofs draining to a central valley gutter, with parapet walls and gutters hidden behind them. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

If you run a business near Southside Wandsworth, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Telferscot Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Hyde farm estate is about 1 mile north of Streatham, in Greater London. In Hyde farm estate, as across Greater London, every roof gets the same careful survey. Hyde farm estate is one of the towns and villages in Greater London where we work.

What we cannot see

We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Useful tips for Hyde farm estate property owners

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit, and whether work has done its job.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, particularly in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

Hyde farm estate questions

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Hyde farm estate?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Hyde farm estate is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hyde farm estate?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

How long will you be at the property?

It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The report follows by email.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Are you insured?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed as you book.

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

When to book a survey in Hyde farm estate

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below

If you live in an older home near St. Stephen's Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
