How a drone roof survey works in Mytchett

Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs on upper floors and valleys and parapet gutters, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moss and weeds taking hold up top and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof.

Older cottages and houses around Mytchett may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up.

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. A drone keeps everyone off them.

How the survey works

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. A visit to Mytchett is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Find any records of previous roof work

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Mytchett

Do you cover smaller places like Mytchett?

Yes. Mytchett is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Is drone flying allowed in Mytchett?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Mytchett is about 3 miles from Farnborough Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Will you check the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

How long does the survey take?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The report is sent afterwards by email.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photos are part of every report.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Mytchett?

Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

Historic houses like Wanborough Manor, about 4.9 miles south-east, show how far back building around Mytchett goes. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs

  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible.

Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Make sure insulation does not block the airflow.
