Drone roof survey in Rainham: what you get

Drones need reasonable weather. High wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you’ve noticed flashings that have come away and ridge pieces that have lifted, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. Images are taken to show the roof we are surveying, with care for neighbours’ privacy. Let us know about the building and access as you book. Steep slopes, tall chimneys and rear additions are where the extra view helps most.

After the visit, you get a report with photographs, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Different roofs, different checks

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

Drones, thermal imaging and Rainham roofs

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. With Rainham Hall about 0.2 miles west, Rainham sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Rainham Village Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. For a London address like Rainham, it helps to know about controlled parking before the day, along with any off-street space.

Rainham is about 4 miles south of Romford, in Greater London. We cover Rainham and the rest of Greater London, as part of our work across London and South East England. Rainham is one of the towns and villages in Greater London where we work for drone roof surveys. There’s also a page for London.

Surveys in RM13 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You will find streets like New Road, Ferry Lane and Wantz Lane, and we cover them all. If you are just outside Rainham, we cover South Hornchurch (1 mile north-west), Beam Park (1 mile west), Hornchurch Marshes (1 mile west), Dagenham Green (2 miles west) and Elm Park (2 miles north). Further out, we also cover London (13 miles west), City of Westminster (15 miles west), Marylebone (15 miles west), St Pancras (13 miles west), Shoreditch (12 miles west) and Walthamstow (11 miles north-west).

Near you in Rainham

Around Rainham, our work takes us to homes and buildings near Harris Academy Rainham, The Chafford School and The Phoenix pub and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in Rainham itself: Rainham (Essex) station. Other landmarks nearby include St George's Hospital (2.3 miles north-east) and Erith Museum (2.6 miles south). For a walk, there is Ingrebourne Marshes.

Tips from our surveys

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Rainham

How do I find out if my home in Rainham is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Rainham?

Sometimes, yes. If Rainham has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

In some places, only with permission. Restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs need NATS permission before a flight. Every address is checked first, and fall back on other viewpoints if we cannot fly.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.

Can you fly a drone near an airport?

Near airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, London City and Stansted, flight restriction zones apply. We check your address and ask for permission where it’s required. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

What you can safely check yourself

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking.

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

When to book a survey in Rainham

From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Faults there can go unnoticed for years.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof

If you live in an older home near Church of St Helen and St Giles, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Before you book anyone

  • When you’ll get the report
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs

What a good roof survey covers

What happens on the day

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. If you have questions on the day, just ask. In Rainham, as in much of London, plenty of properties are flats or terraces without side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. Mention any building rules, key holders or managing agents when booking.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
