How a drone roof survey works in Romford

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and large and complex roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are slipped or missing slates on a high roof and loose ridge and hip tiles.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every address in Romford is checked before any drone flight, and permission is never taken for granted.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Romford

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

We are frequently asked to look at:

  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near The Brewery, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most.

Before you book any roof surveyor

What a roof survey includes

What affects the price in Romford

Prices always include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Roof area
  • How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.

What to let us know when you get in touch

When you call or email, these details help:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

You can call us seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What we do, step by step

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a London conversion, the way into the roof space is often from a communal landing or the top flat. If that applies to your building, it helps to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

FAQs for Romford

Is parking a problem for a survey in Romford?

It rarely stops a survey, but it is worth planning. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we will work around them.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Romford?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in Romford?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, including VAT.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you get in touch and we will explain what’s needed.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photos are part of every report.

Flying and imaging in Romford

London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Hare Hall lies about 1.4 miles north-east, so building around Romford goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Take a building like Concordia Academy: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Useful tips for Romford property owners

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photos and findings. You can ask about anything that isn’t clear.

Keep the loft space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Make sure insulation does not block the airflow.

DIY checks: what’s safe

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
