Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Walthamstow

Drones need reasonable weather. We don’t fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you’re worried about moss and weeds taking hold up top and ponding and splits on a high flat roof, we can find out what’s behind it.

London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. That’s where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what can’t be reached safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Walthamstow as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Drones, thermal imaging and Walthamstow roofs

Outer London has lots of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Shop and office owners around 17 & Central may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. If you live in an older home near Church of St Michael and All Angels, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Bruce Castle lies about 2.4 miles west, so building around Walthamstow goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Walthamstow is about 7 miles north-east of London, in Greater London. We carry out drone roof surveys in Walthamstow for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. Walthamstow is one of the places in Greater London we cover. There’s also a page for London.

For landlords and managing agents

Landlords and letting agents in Walthamstow book surveys as well as householders. A report with photographs gives you a clear record of the roof.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

What we do, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. On timing, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, let us know when you book.

  1. You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Common questions in Walthamstow

Are there drone restrictions around Walthamstow?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Walthamstow?

It depends on the street. If Walthamstow has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.

What will the report tell me?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photographs throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll explain what’s needed.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Will you check the loft?

Where it is relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

Does the weather affect the survey?

Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drones cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.

Useful tips for Walthamstow property owners

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Make sure the loft can be reached

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Every so frequently, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

Can I check my roof myself?

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book.

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
